How LoRaWAN Battery Life Is Estimated
Battery life for a LoRaWAN sensor is driven by four factors: sensor type (base current draw), transmission interval (how often the device wakes to send), battery capacity (in mAh), and LoRa spreading factor (longer range = more air time = more energy per packet). Most battery-powered ParticLIO LoRaWAN sensors use a non-rechargeable lithium thionyl chloride or alkaline pack sized for 3–10 years of service.
Rules of Thumb
- Door/window contacts and smoke detectors typically last 5–10 years on a single cell.
- GPS trackers and always-on Class C devices drain batteries in months rather than years.
- Doubling the transmission interval roughly doubles battery life (a 30-min interval lasts about twice as long as a 15-min one).
- Moving from SF12 to SF7 cuts per-transmission energy by roughly 6× — useful when gateway density permits.
